By the time I finished this novel, my mouth was salivating for not only cake, but French pastries. French translations of the phrase "let them eat cake" are often written as "qu'ils mangent de la brioche", which is technically translated as "let them eat brioche". As a cake is obviously a luxury item, and way more expensive than bread, the anecdote just went to.

From the French qu'ils mangent de la brioche, literally meaning, "let them eat brioche" (a cake-like bread enriched with butter and eggs).
